For the past 15 years, YEA Camp has run life-changing overnight in-person camps for teens and adults who want to make a bigger difference in the world.

We’ve trained thousands of up-and-coming changemakers to get started or get serious on the social justice causes they care about.

And we’re super proud of the impact we’ve made over these years.

We’ve lost track of the number of people who have told us that YEA Camp changed their life. We know YEA Camp has achieved great things because our campers and staff have achieved great things and told us YEA Camp helped them achieve them.

Nothing that I am about to say below can change that, or is intended to minimize the beauty, achievements, relationships, and goodness that have come from what we have created together over these past 15 years.

Fulfilling YEA Camp’s Mission

I’ve been struggling with how to say this for a while now, but I’m just going to say it.

The mission of YEA Camp was never to run a camp.

YEA Camp’s mission is to help more people make a bigger difference to bring about social justice.

A camp was the format that I chose to fulfill that mission way back in 2001 when I first started developing this program, and when we launched in 2009, and ever since. A camp is what made the most sense to me back then.

But I now believe that there are more strategic ways for us to fulfill this mission.

That’s why, after much thought and discussion, I’ve decided that we won’t be holding YEA Camp in person this summer. We may hold it again in the future, but we will not be doing an in-person camp in the summer of 2024.

Changing With the Times

Back in the early years of YEA Camp, platforms that are extremely popular today and that can reach literally anyone on the planet with the Internet (smartphones, podcasts, YouTube, online courses, and sites like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.), either didn’t exist or were not yet widely accessible ways to reach people.

My goal when starting YEA Camp was to help as many people as possible become effective activists for social change.

Without all of those other platforms, a summer camp seemed like a strategic, inspirational, and super fun way to do that.

And it was. I mean, it still is an incredible way to provide in-depth, holistic training to help people who are passionate about a cause to take effective action and make a bigger difference in the world.

But our costs have increased significantly. The 2023 camp cost double what we paid in 2019. We’ve always been committed to offering financial aid and making the camp accessible, which makes it extra hard to get the numbers to work.

With so many new opportunities to expand our impact in more cost-effective ways, we have actually been moving in this direction for several years. It’s the reason we chose to only do 1 session each of the past 2 summers after doing 3 sessions per summer for the 10 years before the pandemic — in order to downsize and streamline our work so that we could expand to create new programs online.

When we got the news recently that the beautiful venue we’ve been at the past 2 summers had been sold and is no longer available, it felt like the writing was on the wall for us to take a hiatus this summer to re-evaluate and be able to move forward with other ideas.

New Possibilities

They say “Necessity is the mother of invention.” And during the pandemic, that was definitely true for us. We found many creative ways to bring our core camp curriculum out into the world.

We can teach YEA Camp’s curriculum on many platforms

Right at the start of the pandemic I started offering classes over Zoom called the Changemakers Challenge. I taught these classes every Monday-Friday for 3 months, which I absolutely loved and which got great reviews. Also in the first weeks of quarantine, a group of about 20 past YEA Campers and staff started meeting regularly over Zoom to brainstorm alternatives to doing camp in-person.

We ended up creating Virtual YEA Camp, which we did for 10 amazing week-long sessions over 2020-2021.

These were our first real forays into online programs, and they were great successes. (I’ve started retroactively referring to this time as YEA 2.0 and this new move for us as YEA 3.0)

In addition to those great programs, we had lots of other ideas that we didn’t do. We knew we couldn’t do all the ideas. But those ideas, and lots of new ones, have stuck with me.

The Possibilities Are Endless

We are really just limited by our imagination and resources, but some of our ideas of programs we could create in the years to come include:

Online courses about topics we teach at YEA Camp for people of all ages to watch anytime

A podcast interviewing inspiring changemakers and role models

Online activist school to teach people how to make a bigger difference

Text and email challenges to support people getting started and being more effective

An online resource center to help people just starting out

Membership program for on-demand videos and training

Group coaching for community support

Youtube/TikTok/Instagram video trainings to reach anyone with the internet and any curiosity about social change

Homeschool, in-school, and after-school curriculum to share our work with students, parents, and teachers

Outschool Zoom classes to reach students where they are

Building out and more strategically promoting my ebook, The Beginner’s Guide to Changing the World, to reach more people

In-person trainings at conferences, festivals, large summer camps, school assemblies, or other events

And lots more possibilities.

Of course we still can’t do all of the ideas! But that’s where you come in!

What’s Next

We will be going through a strategic planning process to evaluate the best next moves for us. We’ve got lots of content already created and will start sharing that on different platforms and iterating as we go.

We’re still a teeny organization with a big vision, but without the in-person camp, which takes so much of our time and resources to put on, we will have more bandwidth to work on these new ideas and re-evaluate from there.

There will be ways for you to get involved, if you want to be!

One way you can start is by filling out this form! We would love to hear your ideas, suggestions, contacts, or visions for the future of YEA Camp or how you would like to be involved.

You can sign up for our email list here to be kept in the loop about our new programs and resources.

A year from now we might decide that we want to go back to doing the camp in person. With more time, we can research another great venue for summer 2025. Or, maybe we don’t move back to in-person in that format. There’s a lot to consider and many possibilities.

As sad as I am about not doing camp in-person this summer, I’m inspired by the possibilities to expand our impact.

And of course, the more resources we have, the more programming we can deliver, the more lives we can impact. If you’re inspired and able to help support making this new vision a reality, it will be a huge help.

15 Amazing Years

It’s been 15 incredible years of YEA Camp

This year is our 15th anniversary! I can’t believe it.

In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be sharing some favorite memories and achievements to reminisce and celebrate our accomplishments. We’d love for you to share any of your reflections here.

As we approach the new year, I am trying to embrace the unknown.

While I’m nervous about this pivot in our work, I’m confident that it’s the right strategic move for us. I feel we at least have to try.

I hope that those of you who have believed in us, supported us, been part of our programs over the past 15 years — as campers, staff, parents, volunteers, donors, advisors, friends, and fans — will continue to believe in us and stay engaged in our work.

To me, YEA Camp has always been a labor of love. And it has always been much more difficult in the winter because I’m often “laboring” alone. The memories of last summer are fading, and the next summer feels far away.

Now everything feels even farther and more uncertain and lonely.

But I am optimistic and excited. I know that our next phase will be easier to create than developing YEA Camp from scratch was all those years ago.

And that all of the amazing experiences, people, and learnings of the past 15 years will help us make an even bigger impact.

Thank you for all the ways you’ve contributed to YEA Camp and to my life personally and professionally over the years, and for all you do to make our world a better place.

I will always be grateful for achieving my dreams in creating and running YEA Camp for all these years.

I’m sure only a small fraction of the countless people who helped make it possible will ever read or hear these words, so extra thanks to those who do.

Whatever ways you have been involved in YEA Camp (or not), feel free to reach out to me anytime at nora @ yeacamp.org if you want to talk more about any of this, reminisce about YEA Camp, or to plan our next steps as we continue to work to help more people make a bigger difference to bring about social justice.

Here are some of the highlights from YEA Camp 2019.

Our 11th Summer

This was our 11th summer hosting YEA Camp for teens ages 12 – 17 and we are so grateful for the opportunity to work with these inspiring young people.

Our first youth camp was held at Nature’s Classroom in Charlton, Massachusetts from July 13 – 20. Our second youth camp was held at Camp Buckhorn in Idyllwild, California from August 3 – 10.

We had around fifty campers at each youth session representing two dozen states and three countries.

From June 30 – July 6, 22 campers from 12 states stayed with us at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in New Paltz, New York for the second ever session of YEA Camp for Adults. From yoga in the morning to meeting with farmed animals after lunch, from workshops on gender and race to trainings on communication and fundraising, our campers had the perfect mix of self-care and reflection while also learning valuable skills to help advance their activism.

Between the three sessions of camp, we were so blessed to have 35 amazing staff members from 16 different states.

Our Impact

Juan Antonio Nelson is an Iowa college student who flew all the way to New York to attend adult camp. When asked about the experience, he said, “Without YEA Camp, I wouldn’t feel that I could make a difference in my immediate community. I wouldn’t have the courage to stand up for others. If not for YEA Camp, I wouldn’t have met a strong community of activists who are passionately advocating for what they believe in.”

A few months ago, former YEA Camper and current YEA staff member Ananya Singh was featured on the Perennials Podcast. In the podcast, Ananya says, “When I was 12 years old, the summer before eighth grade, I attended this summer camp called Youth Empowered Action and this is a camp for teen activists and it really was a life changing experience for me. It exposes you to so many different social issues that are going on in the world and kind of takes the approach of intersectionality and showing how all of these issues are so interconnected and then really breaking down what is possible for young people to do.”

We also recently shared the story of former YEA Camper Leah Kelly who FIVE years after attending camp, wrote this blog post where she says, “Five and a half years ago, as a 15-year-old, I attended Youth Empowered Action (YEA) Camp for the first time and my life was changed immeasurably. I can’t imagine how different my life would have been from then on had I not spent that pivotal week learning what it means to be an effective agent of change and forming lasting connections that supported, and continue to support me as I navigate a chosen path of social justice and fighting for what I believe in.”

Our Brand New Program

This year, we also launched the first-ever YEA Camp Volunteer-a-thon. The Volunteer-a-thon was created to encourage our community in service and activism while raising money for the YEA Camp Scholarship Fund.

All funds raised through the Volunteer-a-thon go towards the YEA Camp Scholarship Fund which makes camp accessible for all who want to attend.

This year, 51 of our 100 participants received financial aid and 17 of those campers were on full scholarships. Overall, we funded $66,400 of financial aid this year.

Our Gratitude

We cannot say thank you enough to everyone who made camp possible. From our food donors to our staff to our donors, thank you.

As the decade comes to a close, I reflect on the experiences that got me where I am today, as an activist and as a person. Five and a half years ago, as a 15-year-old, I attended Youth Empowered Action (YEA) Camp for the first time and my life was changed immeasurably. I can’t imagine how different my life would have been from then on had I not spent that pivotal week learning what it means to be an effective agent of change and forming lasting connections that supported, and continue to support me, as I navigate a chosen path of social justice and fighting for what I believe in.

Call to Activism

Leah Kelly started a successful animal advocacy club in high school after attending YEA Camp.

From the youngest age I can remember, I had always felt the need to stand against things I felt were unjust, but I didn’t really know how to put these feelings into words or actions. YEA Camp gave me the guidance, tools, and encouragement that led me to become a true activist by showing me what it means to turn empathy and passion into social change. It trained me in critical skills such as public speaking, effective communication, “elevator” pitches, leafleting, tabling, campaigning, organizing, and leadership. YEA Camp provided me with key resources such as social networking, data, insight and knowledge, club starter kits, support groups, and incredible and inspiring lifelong mentors and friends.

It takes a look back to realize that that summer of 2014 kickstarted, in some ways both overtly and indirectly, the journey I’ve chosen to pursue long into the future. The fall after I attended YEA Camp for the first time, I founded the animal rights club that I led for the rest of my three years of high school, an experience that truly ignited my leadership abilities and the feeling of self-empowerment I needed to believe I could really make a difference. YEA Camp inspired me to become fully vegan, an element of my life today that is most important to me. After I attended another session the next summer, YEA Camp helped me create and spearhead a plan to get the entire public school system in my town to implement Meatless Mondays. It was a success! We convinced the entire school district to implement Meatless Mondays!

YEA Camp in “the Real World”

Sometime during my time volunteering, supporting, and promoting nonprofit organizations in high school, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to continue doing this for the rest of my life. I want to dedicate myself to social justice activism. There are so many injustices in the world, but as YEA Camp taught me, every person can make a difference. I am particularly invested in fighting for animal rights, and meeting so many vegan activists at YEA Camp made me feel less alone and more hopeful about our collective ability to improve the treatment of non-human animals.

Since graduating high school, I chose to attend a private liberal arts college that I believe embodies the spirit of social justice and welcomes students who sometimes feel on the outskirts of society, empowering them to thrive in a non-judgmental space. Pitzer College in Claremont, California has often felt like YEA Camp to me in its supportive community and composition of young people who are dedicated to caring about and working to end oppression of all forms. I can’t be sure I would have ended up at this college, or where I am in life at all, had YEA Camp not turned me in the direction I needed to go.

Thank You, YEA Camp

Half a decade later, as the end of the 2010s approaches, I can only think back and feel grateful for everything that has gotten me to this place and point in time. I am so thankful for YEA Camp Director Nora Kramer’s dedicated vision to empowering youth to become the next benevolent, impassioned leaders of change. I can only imagine where I will be in another five years, but I do know one thing for sure: you will find me fighting for justice as hard as I ever have.

Leah Kelly is a current junior at Pitzer College in southern California, where she is majoring in sociology and international and intercultural studies with a minor in French. She just returned from a semester studying abroad in Paris. Leah is from Connecticut, where her mom, dad, younger sister, dog, and two cats reside. She is a passionate vegan animal rights activist and active member of her college’s animal rights club. Leah enjoys include being with animals, playing trumpet in concert band and jazz band, creative writing, making art, watching T.V., learning new things, exploring new places, and spending time with friends and family. She attended YEA Camp in 2014 and 2015, served on its Youth Advisory Board, and was the first camper editor for the YEA Camp blog.

As a teeny nonprofit, YEA Camp is only possible with the support of our community. Whether it’s a professional designer volunteering their time to redo parts of our website, a college student and YEA Camp staff member spreading the word on their campus, or a camper’s family donating money to our scholarship fund, we could not do it without the people who step up and give so generously of their time, talents, and finances to help us have a great camp year.

That’s why we were honored and thrilled to have four of our campers step up to join our YEA Camp Fundraising Team this year, in addition to all of the campers and families who have been participating in our first ever YEA Camp Volunteer-a-Thon! The Volunteer-a-Thon is an opportunity for our community to be sponsored in their activism, raising money for YEA Camp and raising awareness about their Issue of Importance. Adding an extra level of social accountability doesn’t hurt when it comes to achieving those big activist goals either!

December is the only time of year when we ask our entire community to support YEA Camp, so we rely on year-end donations to be able to start accepting financial aid applications that are already starting to come in.

Thanks to the support of two generous donors who recognize the importance of our work, this year, all donations given before December 31st 11:59 pm will be TRIPLED! So, a donation of $100 means we get $300. A donation of $1,000 means we get $3,000!

We have such an incredible opportunity with this match, and such a need to be able to continue to fund our programs, so we are incredibly grateful for the YEA Camp Fundraising Team helping us to reach our goal.

Where Does the Money Go?

Before we introduce these rockstar campers, it’s important to understand why we fundraise. The simple fact is, not everybody can afford to send their kids to camp. In fact, this year, 51 of our 100 campers were on some form of financial aid. Seventeen of those campers received a full scholarship.

At YEA Camp, we are committed to making camp accessible for all who want to be there, and to having a diverse group of campers who can learn from and support one another. This is only possible thanks to our generous donors, and we are so grateful for those who make this possible.

Which brings us to those rockstar campers! Last year, our YEA Camp alumni jumped at the chance to reach out to our donors, sharing their experience at camp, and helping us raise money for the scholarship fund. Last year, Ashlee, Mia, and Sade answered the call and throughout the month of December reached out to our donors, helping us reach our fundraising goal. You can read more about their experience here.

Meet the 2019 Fundraising Team

When it came time to make calls this year, Mia was the first one to raise her hand to do it again! Three other campers, also from our Massachusetts 2019 session of youth camp, joined. Here’s more about these amazing campers and what they had to say about the experience.

Mia Jay-Pachirat, the team veteran, is a 2-time YEA Camper from New York City. Currently a high school senior, Mia is passionate about protecting the environment. She was so excited to be a part of the Fundraising Team because she “loves YEA Camp and wants to help others have that experience, no matter their financial position.” Mia also created a Volunteer-a-Thon page to raise even more funds for YEA Camp!

Here they are at the Massachusetts session of camp this summer!

Sam Geller, a high school junior from Connecticut, is passionate about gun reform and likes to go to marches and rallies. Sam says he wanted to be part of the fundraising team because “YEA Camp was a life-changing experience for me. I learned so much about fundraising and friendship.” Check out Sam’s Volunteer-a-Thon page here.

Mia Drumm is an 18-year-old high school senior from Louisiana who is passionate about veganism and animal rights. This was her second year at YEA Camp and her first year on our Fundraising Team. She was so excited to join the team in order to help increase financial aid opportunities for future campers.

Fourteen-year-old high school freshman Isabella King came to Massachusetts YEA Camp all the way from Denver, Colorado. She “wanted to be on the YEA Camp Fundraising Team because YEA Camp was a really impactful experience for me, and I want to help ensure that everyone who is interested in attending YEA Camp has the opportunity to have that same experience.”

We are so grateful for Mia, Mia, Sam, and Isabella and to everyone who donated to this fundraiser. We are so grateful for everyone who makes camp possible for so many people.

To quote Mia Jay-Pachirat, “YEA Camp has changed my life. That may seem cheesy, but I have re-lit my activist fire, while making the best friends in the world — and all because of YEA.”

Can you help us make this life-changing experience available for more aspiring activists? There is still time to donate to YEA Camp.
Interested in joining us at camp next year?

It may feel like summer is years away (especially as much of the country is hibernating in blankets under blankets of snow), but we are already planning for YEA Camp 2020 and are already accepting registrations. Check our the dates below.

Youth Camp: in Ventura, California (July 5 – 12) and Charlton, Massachusetts (August 1 – 8)

Right now, we are also running an Early Bird special registration for $250 off those who sign up before the end of the year.

For over a decade, YEA Camp has been training aspiring activists to make a bigger difference in the world. At this time of year, when we are fundraising in order to be able to continue doing this work, we asked some of our campers and staff to reflect on what difference YEA Camp really made for them. What difference would it have made if they hadn’t attended YEA Camp?

We’re inspired to share these responses with you and hope you will keep them in mind as we reach out to our community to ask for the financial support to be able to continue offering YEA Camp for everyone who wants to attend. All donations made until the end of the year will be tripled by two generous donors!

If Not for YEA Camp…

YEA Camper Sarah Goody has become a leading activist in the national #climatestrike campaign, having led strikes in the Bay Area for more than 20 weeks! Sarah said “If not for YEA Camp, I would not have the courage and confidence to take action. YEA Camp provided me with the fundamentals of activism that were crucial to getting me to where I am today. YEA Camp changed the way I saw the world.” (OK, we can retire now!)

Now that YEA Camp runs camps for adults, we are thrilled to be able to make an impact for folks 18 and up! Juan Antonio Nelson, a college student who attended YEA Camp for Adults last year, said: “Without YEA Camp, I wouldn’t feel that I could make a difference in my immediate community. I wouldn’t have the courage to stand up for others. If not for YEA Camp, I wouldn’t have met a strong community of activists who are passionately advocating for what they believe in. I wouldn’t have had the courage to organize a film screening with my fraternity that speaks about toxic masculinity. I wouldn’t have had the courage to organize an open dialogue/forum with other males on my college campus to speak about masculinity and what we can do to solve the problem.” We need more Juan Antonios!

Hannah Rosenberg was a camper as a 17-year-old and this summer returned as a college student 2 years later to be one of our assistant chefs. We love having former campers join us on staff! Hannah said “If not for YEA Camp, I wouldn’t realize the potential every single person has to make a difference. I now have an improved confidence to take action and to be an outspoken example for the changes I wish to see in the world.”

Elise said “If not for YEA Camp, I would not have been reminded of the other people who are also passionately working for change on a daily basis, as well as felt inspired to continue to work for a better tomorrow.”

Fifteen-year-old Esmee Halsted came all the way from Colorado to our camp in Massachusetts last year, and we’re so glad she did! “If not for YEA Camp, I don’t think I would have realized my full potential. The incredibly supportive people and environment at YEA Camp was the first time I ever felt comfortable being 100% myself. I guess you could say it was the first time I was ‘loud and proud.’ I was never judged, always included, and free to communicate in the way that is uniquely me.”

Another participant at our YEA Camp for Adults last year, Brianna Quezada told us that “If not for YEA Camp, I would not be aware of most of the problems that don’t directly affect me and the different things I can do to not only raise awareness, but to also implement changes.” We love that so many adults have gotten similar value from attending YEA Camp for Adults as our teen campers have! YEA Camp’s curriculum focuses on developing knowledge, skills, confidence, and community, and most people regardless of age, unfortunately, haven’t learned these things in school, college, or elsewhere, which is why we started YEA Camp for Adults in the first place!

Danielle Holtz was a camper at age 17 and in the 5 years since then, she has held just about every role we have and even other ones that we created just for her or that she created herself! She’s been a counselor-in-training, counselor, Operations Manager, blog editor, intern, Youth Advisory Board member, and founder of the youth fundraising and publicity teams.

Danielle says that “If not for YEA Camp, I wouldn’t understand the issues that are so important to changing society, nor would I have met many of my best friends.” We at YEA Camp don’t want to contemplate the question “If not for Danielle.”

(We’ll start hiring after the new year, if you’re interested!) One of our awesome chefs from this past summer, Shira Golan, shared that if not for YEA Camp, “I wouldn’t have met such amazing, likeminded and passionate people and probably would never have learned to cut correctly (thanks Jeri :)” Ha ha! We are glad Shira learned a lot at YEA Camp — we sure enjoyed her cooking!

How inspiring are these stories?! They motivate us to keep at it and continue to make YEA Camp the most effective program we can and available to as many people as possible.

Help us Bring YEA Camp to More Activists

Now through the end of the year, you can help us impact even more lives through the YEA Camp scholarship fund. Last year, 51 of our 100 campers were on some form of financial aid, and 17 of them were on a full scholarship. At YEA Camp, we stand by our values of accessibility and want to make sure that anyone who wants to be at camp can be at camp. We can only do that with your help, though.

We are thrilled that when you make a tax-deductible contribution to YEA Camp between now and the end of the year, your donation will be TRIPLED thanks to the generous support of two of our most committed donors. To donate, just go to YEACamp.org/donate and the donation will automatically be matched!
